ChampionChip

The ChampionChip was born in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. In 1993 a prototype was used at the Seven Hills Run 15K with 7400 participants; the trial was so successful that ChampionChip was founded. It's goal was to develop a professional transponder system for automatic timing of sporting events. By 1994 a professional system was introduced to the Berlin Marathon.

How It Works

The ChampionChip Timing System is based on the high-frequency-identification system.

  • Tartan carpets are laid across the start/finish. Each carpet contains antennas.
  • The runner crosses the mats wearing the Timing Chip.
  • The Antennas read the code being sent from the transponder inside the timing chip.
  • The timing chip code is then sent to The Control Box and then to The Ear.
  • The Ear attaches the time the chip crossed the Tartan Carpets (antenna mats).
  • This information is downloaded to our Timing Program.
  • The entire process takes approximately 60 milliseconds.

How To Use It

The Timing Chip should be attached using either:

  • A Velcro ankle band: Chip is attached and placed on your ankle.
  • A zip tie: Chip is attached and 'zip tied' to the shoe (not too tight as it may break the chip handles and be lost during the event).
  • A shoelace: Chip is attached to the shoe using the two holes closest to the transponder. Lace normally and tie off.

Unless otherwise specified all timing chips must be worn on the ankle or lower in order for the system to read the chip identification code.

Various Concepts of the ChampionChip

Owners' Use Only
Classic ChampionChip: This type of chip is used by owners only. They must be purchased and can be used world wide.
Logo ChampionChip: Also available for purchase and usable worldwide, this version has the ChampionChip logo inserted into the center of the chip.
Personalized ChampionChip: Designed for running clubs and other groups for their members, this option has the same benefits as the Classic Chip. Personal artwork is inserted into the center of the Logo Chip.
Volume discounts may apply.

Event Use Rental Chips
Black ChampionChip: These are issued by the event for use at that event only. They are borrowed by each participant and must be returned after use at each event.
